Silence is golden

I called on the help of the obliging Iain B to deal with changing the battery in the alarm. The wretched thing seems to have been designed to make it as difficult as possible to change the battery, and we weren't helped by the fact that the guys who installed it did a poor job. They didn't bother using rawlplugs to fix it to the sloping kitchen ceiling, so it's been hanging loose at one side for almost since it was installed 5 years ago. With Iain's valient efforts to get the thing apart, the last screw came out so it was hanging entirely by the wiring - which fortunately is good and study.

I held it steady while Iain prised the connectors out and managed to open the battery compartment, with only a moderate amount of cursing. New battery went in, and Iain held the alarm flush against the ceiling while I fixed it there with gaff tape. Not pretty, but effective.

Of course I could have called the landlord and asked him to send the professionals around, but knowing him, it would have taken a week. And I'd have to listen to the alarm beeping loudly once every minute for that entire week..

Thankfully, I have friends like Iain.
