The first....

It's sunny today, and it must be spring, as I just heard the first ice-cream van of the year :) It was playing a warbly version of The Entertainer. I wonder how much business the travelling vans do now that most people have freezers and therefore have ice cream at home ? The appearance of the ice cream van used to be such a treat when I was a child.I once found myself the money for a cone (3p), by searching for pennies and halfpennies in the pockets of the coats hung in the hall. The promise of ice cream can do wonders for one's rescourcefullness.

I haven't seen a police woman in a skirt of any kind for about 15 years. My first thought was AU.

the ice-cream van which comes to our street usually does a roaring business. He doesn't seem to be put off by the seasons either - the only time we didn't see him was over christmas and january, but I suspect most of that was due to the snow!

Our kids can hear it coming three streets away...

The guy in the park from Granelli's does a pretty good trade and he's there almost all year round!

Mmmm...ice cream!

I see the vans in parks and suchlike doing OK. They're selling to people who are away from home. But the street sales must be lower than they were 30 years ago. The vans brought ice cream to homes that didn't have freezers and so didn't have ice cream readily available.
The arrival of the ice cream van was always exciting because there was such a wonderful selection of lollies as well as cones. About the only things you could buy in the shops to take home then were vanilla, strawberry or neopolitan ice cream, or cheap choc ices. Neopolitan was about as exotic as ice cream got, on the whole.

Vans do well enough here too: they offer different flavours (and the possibility of something new), cones, and other options. They never come down our road though because it's a main one, but I hear them in the streets down the hill.
